Feature Story

Risk Assessment Is A Skill

The problem is...

  • We have to think about risks differently as we get older
  • Health insurance & Medicare might not cover all our future needs
  • Without proper planning, we could face money troubles down the road
  • We're more likely to fall, forget things, or be taken advantage of financially

5 resources you can use

Roadblocks

  • Not realizing how important it is to think about future risks
  • It's tricky to look at all the different risks at once (health, money, home safety)
  • We don't always want to think about getting older or needing help
  • There's no one-size-fits-all way to check for risks

Upsides & ways to beat roadblocks

  • Doctors are getting better at spotting risks early
  • There are now tools to help check if we're at risk for money problems
  • Talking to specialists about future care can be really helpful
  • Getting family & friends involved in planning can make it easier
  • Focusing on what matters most to us as we age can guide our choices

Takeaways

  • Regular ā€œcheck-upsā€ on our risks can help us stay independent longer
  • Taking care of multiple areas of our life at once can really cut down on hassles & hardships
  • Planning ahead can lead to better health & lower costs in the long run
  • Being involved in our own risk planning is key to making it work for us

Face The Facts (then punch ā€™em in the nose)

Know the facts so you can overcome or take advantage of them.

5)  Around 1 in 6 people 60 years & older experienced some form of abuse in community settings during the past year

4)  Survey: The 3 most common HOA violations are landscaping issues, design changes, & fence issues (Door Loop)

3)  90% of elder abuse cases occur in the victim's residential home

2)  Over 80% of senior falls happen in the bathroom, making grab bars a crucial safety feature

1)  About 1 in 12 grandmothers attend a grandchild's sporting events, recitals, or similar activities. About 1 in 14 grandfathers attend such events (Deseret)

šŸ‘ŠLetā€™s punch elder abuse in the nose.

Ways to protect yourself or your elderly parents:
  • Pop in for surprise visits
  • Get family, friends, & neighbors involved for a wider support network
  • Sort out power of attorney long before it's needed
  • Use surveillance gadgets to keep an eye on things (donā€™t feel guilty about ā€œspyingā€ on caregivers)
  • Do your homework on caregivers, whether they're pros or family members
  • Set up safeguards against financial funny business (i.e., bank alerts)

We had two terrific women who helped with my Mama when she could no longer care for herself. But we also had at least two caregivers who were ā€œnot all thereā€ & one who was fired for stealing pain medication. So, please be vigilant & donā€™t assume all caregivers actually care.
