Feature Story

Sharpen Digital Skills

One-third of older Americans struggle with technology.

The problem is...

  • Many seniors feel overwhelmed by technology
  • Lack of confidence in learning new devices
  • Fear of making mistakes or breaking equipment
  • Privacy & security concerns
  • Physical limitations like vision or hearing

Why solving this problem's so dang tough

  • Technology changes too fast
  • Limited access to patient, senior-focused training
  • Many support services are online - a real catch-22
  • Cost barriers for devices & support services
  • Generational gap in understanding digital basics

How you can get involved to help

  • Volunteer as a tech mentor
  • Share knowledge with peers
  • Join senior tech support groups
  • Attend community tech workshops
  • Spread the word about resources

Roadblocks

  • Limited availability of in-person support
  • Professional services costly
  • Language barriers
  • Transportation to training locations
  • Internet access in some regions

Upsides & ways to beat roadblocks

  • Many services offer phone-based support
  • Free virtual classes available
  • Intergenerational learning programs
  • Multilingual support options growing
  • Some organizations offer home visits

5 takeaways

  • Start with one device or app & master it
  • Use senior-specific support services
  • Don't be afraid to ask for help repeatedly
  • Take advantage of free resources (grandkids😁)
  • Focus on learning at your own pace

Personal story on the topic…

My dad was notorious for getting his TV out of whack. He was a smart man. Could build barns & run heavy machinery. But the input button on his Dish remote threw him off. After 20 times of me getting the right “input” back for him, I did the smart thing - removed the input button on the remote with needle-nose pliers. Tech problem solved.
